II Disaster Preparation at Home

Disaster Preparation at Home

Talk with your family!

Your family will not necessarily be together when a disaster occurs. Have a list of contact information for workplaces and schools. In addition, make sure that you have an emergency supply and evacuation kit.

Make sure you know evacuation routes and the locations of evacuation areas!

Municipal offices provide hazard maps that mark possible danger areas as well as evacuation areas so that residents can evacuate safely. Check the location of your home and the nearest evacuation areas.

Participate in a volunteer disaster preparation group!

A volunteer disaster preparation group is a cooperative organization that is formed independently by community residents. There are over 2,300 of these groups in Toyama Prefecture, many of them founded by neighborhood associations. Fire departments and other governmental disaster management agencies usually provide aid during a disaster but there is a limit to their capabilities, especially in the early stages. Make sure to have strong bonds with your community.
